About the Artwork

Gustave Caillebotte studied law and served in the military before entering the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1873 through the influence of the academic painter Léon Bonnat. In 1874 he associated himself with the Impressionists who were then under intense criticism from academic circles, with his own paintings of urban subject matter consistent with the Impressionist style. Caillebotte was an amateur horticulturist and floral still-lifes became important in his work after his departure from Paris. At this time, his technique loosened, though here his flowers appear densely arranged over a large portion of the picture field. The painting pulsates with life and color harmonies and demonstrates the artist’s firm mastery of the Impressionist style.
