About the Artwork

Jean Hyacinthe de Laclotte (French-American, 1766-1829), Battle of New Orleans, 1815. Oil on canvas. Gift of Edgar William and Bernice Chrysler Garbisch.

During the War of 1812 Laclotte was an assistant engineer in the Louisiana Army and was able to render the battle from a first-hand panoramic view. This view is the only one believed to be authentic; other known paintings of the subject seem to be fantasized versions. Laclotte’s painting depicts Jackson and his militia on the left, entrenched behind the Rodriquez Canal. The British General Packenham is shown leading his troops in a direct frontal attack on the Americans. This action occurred on the grounds of the Chalmette plantation, east of the city, on January 8, 1815.
