About the Artwork

Jehan Georges Vibert (French, 1840-1902), The Cardinals' Friendly Chat, circa 1880. Oil on canvas. New Orleans Museum of Art, Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Chapman H. Hyams.

The Cardinals’ Friendly Chat depicts two ecclesiastical enjoying an animated conversation over wine and elegant cakes. Vibert makes an intentional ironic reference to the eucharist with the biscuit being soaked in wine. This comic mode creates a theatrical feeling that is clearly related to Vibert’s stage productions. The playful mockery of the princes of the Church is taken further by the setting of their intimate afternoon party; it is the Turkish Boudoir of Queen Marie-Antoinette in the castle of Fontainebleau. The furnishings in the Empire style were added by Empress Josephine in 1805.
