Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (Italian, 1696-1770), Boy Holding a Book (Portrait of Lorenzo Tiepolo), circa 1747-1750. Oil on canvas. New Orleans Museum of Art, The Samuel H. Kress Collection.
Boy Holding a Book is from Tiepolo’s early phase which is characterized by an affinity with the work of Piazzetta and a palette of deep, earthy colors. His ability to conjure figures full of life and vibrant energy is evident in the image of this boy who, in a movement at once exuberant and restrained, turns to look over his shoulder. This diagonal motion is a favorite compositional device of Tiepolo’s as well as a continued link with the Baroque. Illuminated against a dark background, the figure radiates the vital force and intensity expected of a young and energetic boy.
