About the Artwork

Alexis Joseph Pérignon (French, 1806-1882), Madame Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun Painting the Portrait of Queen Marie Antoinette, 1859.
Oil on canvas, 53 1/8 × 39 1/4 in (134.94 × 99.70 cm). New Orleans Museum of Art, Gift of Joseph Baillio, 2010.15.

This painting by Perignon depicts a scene where Vigée Le Brun has spilled her painting materials while working on a portrait of Marie Antoinette. However, instead of Vigée Le Brun retrieving these objects, Marie Antoinette herself kneels to aid the artist in picking up her brushes. This scene is significant, for it demonstrates the respect that a notable artist such as Vigée Le Brun was given.
