About the Artwork

Eugène Atget (French, 1857-1927), Versailles, Le Parc, n.d. Albumen print. New Orleans Museum of Art, Museum purchase, General Acquisitions Fund.

Atget’s massive body of work reveals his equitable treatment of whatever found its way in front of his camera; his dead-on, unmanipulated approach offers each of his subjects - be it a picturesque park or a door knocker - an equal opportunity at greatness. While each of his pictures individually provides a description of a particular subject, as a whole they capture something ephemeral, invoking a palpable sense of nostalgia. Perhaps he was only a simple commercial photographer, but his substantial oeuvre carries with it comprehensive, irreplaceable views of fleeting moments from the past.
